The 2013 festival is again at the historic Moira Furnace, on the restored length of the Ashby Canal. Over the weekend of 18th - 19th May 2013, there will be a wide range of entertainment for all.
Hawkeye Birds of Prey will demonstate the power and majesty of these fasinating birds. This year we have the Civil War re-enactment society Open Rope, with their weaponry display, firepower, and drill dispalys, to reenact the battle for the swing bridge. An exciting event for 2013 is the Top Lodge Dancing Dogs display team. The 3 dog handlers (and dogs) come highly qualified, with many major awards including Crufts British Freestyle, World Champion Heelwork, and International Freestyle champion, so we can expect a brilliant show! There will be the 10 piece swing band Strictly Swing, and also Dragonhead to give us a varity of musical styles. There will be Morris Dancing to liven things up, craft fun for the children, live steam, a variety of stalls and demonstrations, boats, bar and refreshments, which all revolved round the banks of the Ashby Canal, at the Heart of the National Forest.
We were very lucky with weather for the 2012 canal festival. Whilst many events had to be cancelled because of rain and waterlogged sites, the festival went ahead without a hitch. It was cold on the Saturday, and only a little warmer on Sunday – but no rain. So the weather will be excellent for 2013 (honest)
The festival aims to raise awareness and funding for the restoration of the Ashby Canal. The project to reconnect the isolated section between Donisthorpe and Moira to the current terminus at Snarestone began last year, but there is still a long way to go… about 5 miles, 2 aqueducts and new locks.
The Moira Furnace Museum
will be open and the Joseph Wilkes trip boat will be running.
We look forward to seeing you at the Canal Festival -and catch up on progress on the Ashby Canal
restoration at the Ashby Canal Association tent.
